Irrigation: Which system is the most suited to your crops?

12 March 2020

Whether it is for market gardening, horticultural or tree farming, it is important to have an irrigation system which is optimised both environmentally and economically, but also adapted to the specific nature of each and every crop.

This can be accomplished by carrying out a detailed technical study with the aim of optimising all existing irrigation systems for your range of crops.

An irrigation system is composed of a range of installations:

To start with, you will need to identify your electricity and water supply.

If a borehole is required, water may need to be stored relative to the flow rate of the borehole because if the latter is not sufficient, a buried or above-ground water tank with a storage capacity of 2,000m3 for bore water and rainwater will be required.

The water is then pumped before being filtered. Each pumping system is tailored to the volume of water required and the irrigation equipment currently in use on the operation. One of our experts will advise you on the best model for your needs (e.g. brand, flow rate, pressure, etc.). A filter can then be chosen according to the water quality and the filtration needs of the dispenser: Sand filtration, Disc filtration & Screen filtration.

Once it is pumped and filtered, the water is channelled to the irrigation system through a network of PVC or polyethylene pipes. The water system can be opened or closed using different types of valves, either manual or automatic.

Next comes the choice of irrigation system:

Spraying:

A suitable field crop irrigation system for large rain gauge.

Micro sprinkler:

A good water-saving solution that is similar to light rain. This method is ideal for greenhouse market gardeners, nursery owners, horticulturists and arborists.

Drip irrigation system:

This equipment can be used under ground or above ground and works very well at managing water consumption. It is a suitable irrigation system for a range of crops such as strawberries, tomatoes, leeks and even fruit trees.

Misting:

This is a technique used in greenhouses for market gardening, horticulture and nurseries. The main advantage of this system is the regulation of both humidity and temperature.
